When I was little, I grew up watching Disney shows and movies. And of course, a Disney Movie wouldn’t be complete without a Princess. As a little girl I had always been fascinated by Princesses and their lovely hair, perfect teeth and sparkly gowns. Growing up, that hasn’t changed. I still watch Princess Movies from “Snow White” (which was shown way before I was born) to the newly loved “Frozen”. Some people may find it pathetic to still love Disney princesses at this age; they would find it overrated or immature, but Princesses aren’t just about the pretty tiaras and gowns or the adorable prince charmings (who are of course 50% of the reason). Growing up watching Disney princesses has also taught me things not every cartoon character gets to teach me. They have taught me that life isn’t perfect and that Love and dreams are powerful things.
Everybody thinks that a princess’ life is perfect; well for me, a true princess’ life is never perfect (before they have their “happily ever after” anyway). Look at Cinderella, she’s pretty, smart but she doesn’t have a father and she lives in a world of cinders before she becomes a princess. Snow White, who’s a princess from the very beginning, has an evil stepmother and has to run away. Belle, she’s nice, lovely but she and her dad don’t really have much. Ariel, a mermaid, falls in love with a human but it is not to be. Life isn’t perfect for us too; we may never have everything we want or our circumstances aren’t the best but we should always remember: these princesses’ lives were imperfect ones but they still managed to find their happily ever after’s. We should never complain on what we have, because these princesses never did. Their kindness, hard work and choices took them to their happiness and they deserved it.
So many movies talk about love, but Disney movies talk about love and dreams in their purest form. Disney Princess has taught us to follow our hearts in every choice we make, and I have always believed in that. Following our hearts may be too complicated for other people, but doing so is easy if we know who we are and what we want. Imagine what could have happened if Cinderella didn’t do anything in “Cinderella III” when Anastasia fit the slipper, would she still have her happy ending? Or if Rapunzel in “Tangled” didn’t have a dream to see the floating lights, would she meet the love of her life or her real parents? Or if Tiana from “The Princess and the Frog” did not dream of owning a restaurant, would she meet Prince Naveen and be happy like she never was before? Dreams are a crucial part in every Princess’ life; they define what her happy ever after would be and they make her do something to achieve them. Maybe that’s another part of what princesses get to teach us—to work hard and make sacrifices for our dreams.
Through the years many more princesses have been added to the Disney family, like Merida from “Brave” and Anna and Elsa from “Frozen”. Merida and Elsa are the two Disney Princesses who don’t have love interests and it just clearly shows that being a Princess is not only about the handsome prince charming. Everyone can be a princess too, but one doesn’t have to be like Cinderella or Ariel or Snow White or Belle. One can be a princess in this modern fairytale—a princess who shows courage and knows herself more than anyone, a princess who finds it widely important to be kind to both human and animal, a princess who believes that love between each of us is essential, and most especially, a princess who believes in her dreams. You might not know, your happily ever after would just be right around the corner.
